On 30th October 2019, Healthwatch Hackney undertook an Enter and View visit to Oswald Street Day Centre. It is the only day service in Hackney which was opened to people in September 2018. The purpose of their visit was to observe the service and interview staff, clients and carers. They found that it was a well-run, well-equipped, modern centre for people with substantial support needs. The staff were friendly, motivated and felt they treated people with care and dignity. Healthwatch staff also observed that the service currently worked well because of the high staff-client ratios and buoyant staff morale. They believe it is vital that staff levels increase in line with the number of people who attend the centre. They also noted plenty of scope to introduce enhanced communications methods to help people express their views, needs and preferences including, pictorials, visual timetables and Makaton. The report made six recommendations and received a response from the providers for each.
