Summary of report content

Healthwatch attended the Deaf and Deafblind Sports Event, on Saturday 12th March at City Academy Bristol, and met lots of children, young people and adults and listened to their experiences of health and social care services. They also spoke to other organisations attending the event and discussed how they could work together in the future to support people’s health and wellbeing needs.

The report highlights issues faced by service users when accompanying their loved ones to the GP or hospital. Comments were captured about the difficulties of accessing sign language interpreter, enough Deaf awareness training for staff and specialist BSL Psychological Therapy services being discontinued. One commentator said, “how does the doctor know I’m telling my son same thing the doctor is saying? How does the doctor know I’m telling him what my son is signing to me?”

The feedback provided was included in the Healthwatch Bristol quarterly report, which was shared with Bristol CCG along with CQC and HW England. The report includes ideas generated by HW Bristol for future work to be done in order to support the Deaf and deafblind accessing healthcare and other services in the community.
