Summary of report content

As part of their project 'The impact of Covid19 and new models of care', Healthwatch Leicestershire and Healthwatch Leicester wanted to:

  • examine how people are accessing health and social care
  • assess which of those models of care people prefer
  • make recommendations based on the end-user experience

They developed a short survey to find out people's experiences of accessing their GP Practice during the pandemic. Healthwatch Leicestershire and Healthwatch Leicester also attended 35 events between July – September 2021.

351 people took the time to share their experiences of accessing GP care during the pandemic.

They asked four key questions:

  1. What is your experience of getting an appointment at your GP Practice?

45% of respondents reported a negative experience of getting an appointment at their GP practice.

  1. What is your experience of getting repeat prescriptions?

68% of respondents reported a positive experience of repeat prescriptions, with many highlighting the NHS App as being particularly useful.

  1. How satisfied are you with your GP Practice?

46% of respondents reported being satisfied with their GP, compared to 35% who were dissatisfied.

  1. What single change would improve your experience of accessing your GP Practice?

Key improvements suggested were – easier access to booking appointments via telephones, shorter waiting times, online booking being available, increased availability of appointments, and more face to face appointments.

A number of recommendations were made in this report.
