Healthwatch Barnsley decided to investigate women's health as public feedback indicated that it was a local priority. They undertook a survey to which 276 women responded.
Menstrual health and gynaecological conditions emerged as the top overall priority
There were differences by age group. For under 18s, mental health and wellbeing was the dominant concern. For women aged 18 to 44, menstrual health and gynaecological conditions were the top priority. For women aged 45 and over, healthy ageing and long‑term conditions became the leading concern. Cancer remained important across all age groups, reflecting fears about late diagnosis and survival.
Many women reported being “fobbed off” by GPs or told symptoms were normal, particularly for gynaecological conditions and menopause.
Long waits for referrals, tests, follow‑up appointments, and surgery were common, especially for conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, and PCOS.
Poor mental health was closely linked with physical health concerns, miscarriages, long‑term conditions, menopause, and caring responsibilities.
Women expressed fears about cancers being detected too late and concerns about reduced focus on smear tests and breast screening.
Many felt there was a lack of accessible, trusted information and specialist knowledge among healthcare professionals regarding women’s health.
