What young people told us at Middlesex University Fresher's Fair 2018

Healthwatch Barnet undertook a brief survey at the Middlesex University Freshers’ Fair 2018 to understand students’ engagement with basic healthcare services, particularly GP registration and dental care. The project aimed to assess whether students had registered with a GP and whether they had seen a dentist within the previous three years. A total of 93 students participated. 

The survey found that 69% of students were registered with a GP, while 31% were not registered. It also found that 66% of students had visited a dentist within the past three years, while 34% had not. 

Overall, most students appeared to understand the importance of registering with a GP. Those who had not yet registered generally indicated that they intended to do so in the near future. Many students who were registered remained registered with practices close to their family home rather than near the university

Dental costs emerged as a significant area of concern. Students who were not regularly accessing dental services frequently asked about the cost of registration and check-ups and wanted to know whether student discounts were available. The report suggested that concerns about affordability may be a barrier to accessing dental care. 

The survey also highlighted challenges for international students. Healthwatch spoke to a number of international students who were uncertain about how the NHS and GP registration system worked and needed additional guidance about accessing healthcare services in the UK. 

Despite some students not attending dental appointments regularly, participants generally recognised the importance of oral health. Many understood the particular relevance of dental care for young adults, especially during the age when wisdom teeth commonly emerge and can cause pain, infection or require treatment.

Based on the findings, Healthwatch Barnet concluded that ongoing awareness raising is needed to encourage students to register with GPs and dentists and to understand how local health services operate. The report recommended providing regular information through universities, student unions, social media and printed materials. It also recommended offering clearer guidance for international students about accessing healthcare and providing information about dental services, costs and any available financial support or discounts.
