Summary of report content

This is an easy read report of Healthwatch Norfolk’s findings from consultation workshops with adults with learning disabilities about safeguarding. The workshops were held with Opening Doors Health Experts group.

Questions for the workshops were coproduced with Norfolk Adults Safeguarding Board. Peer trainers lead workshops across Norfolk. Some people were sent Easy Read workbooks they could complete at home.

In total, 55 people took part in the consultation. When asked what services they access, nearly all said they access day activities and around half said they go to learning disability social clubs. About a quarter access community groups and the same number are in receipt of care/support.

A majority of said they do not know what safeguarding means, with only five people having a good understanding.

The report has three recommendations.

  1. Provide awareness training about safeguarding with and for adults with learning disabilities.
  2. Use Easy Read materials and peer support to help spread awareness and experience.
  3. Address barriers to reporting where possible.
