Summary of report content

Healthwatch Derby carried out a survey to find out why some people were not taking up the offer of the Covid-19 vaccine, or were saying that they would not do so.

They identified two main areas of concern for people who were unlikely to have a vaccine if it was offered to them:

  • worries around the effects on person’s own health
  • worries about the safety of the vaccine

People who were worried about the effect of the vaccine on their health were worried about the long-term effects on their health, side effects of the vaccine and effects on their long-term condition.

Some of the people who were worried about the safety of the vaccine wanted to wait to see how the vaccine worked, while some didn’t think it was safe for them. There were a few people who thought Covid-19 was not a personal risk to them.

  • Most hesitant people wanted more research published with testing and results shown/evidenced over a longer period of time.
  • They also wanted clearer information to make their decisions that address their concerns.
  • Choice of vaccine and of the venue to receive it.
  • Learning disabilities and mental health conditions taken into account and patients offered alternative venues or time slots to suit their needs.
