Summary of report content

Healthwatch Southampton undertook research into people’s experiences of appointments at Southampton Hospital Ophthalmology Department.  They spoke to 38 people via a survey and interviews.

Nearly 9 in 10 were the patient accessing the services.  Nearly two thirds were seen within a three month period. Half said their appointment wasn’t’ changed to a later date. Four out of five patients who needed to change the date of their appointment were accommodated by the Ophthalmology Department.

Nearly three in ten people reported that delays to their appointment date had a negative impact on their sight.

Over half rated the communication from the Ophthalmology Department as good or very good.

Most either received support as a result of sight loss or stated that their eyesight was not impacted by delays. However, just over a fifth of patients felt they received no support as a result of the sight loss.
