Healthwatch Oldham undertook research with local Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities about their understanding of diabetes and how they can help prevent developing type 2 diabetes. 53 people completed surveys at local forums.
Just under a third of those who completed a survey stated they had a type of diabetes, mainly type 2 diabetes. Nearly half of those who stated that they didn’t have diabetes, cared for, or knew someone that has. People felt that being overweight, consuming sugary food and drink and a lack of exercise are the highest risks of developing type 2 diabetes.
Most people feel they can change most of their habits, but the highest scored responses were improving their level of exercise, losing weight, increasing their intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and reducing their consumption of sugary food and drinks. Most people stated they had received all three relevant health checks (cholesterol checked, waist measured and blood pressure taken) in the last 12 months.
The report contains 6 recommendations about better public awareness and information of how to live healthier lifestyles to prevent type 2 diabetes.
