In May 2020, Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire undertook an online survey to investigate the extent of current information and advice provided on local GP surgery websites about elective treatments.
They evaluated websites of 34 GP surgeries in Central Bedfordshire and found that in many instances the latest NHS information about COVID-19 was on the front page. However, many had significant amount of out of date information still being displayed. All the websites reviewed displayed some form of current Covid-19 advice and majority demonstrated a link to the NHS Covid-19 site. Disappointingly, only a few of GP Practice websites displayed links to Cancer Support Groups, either locally or nationally.
The report concluded that it was not clear who is responsible for updating information and content of GP websites. However it was clear that many GP practise websites in Central Bedfordshire were lacking vital up to date information and advice for their patients and visitors to the website, with many specifically lacking information relating to what to do about cancer treatment during the pandemic, and sign posting to Cancer Support groups.
The report made recommendations to all GP practises in Central Bedfordshire to review their websites and make sure the sites have the most up to date information and advice. They also recommended that Bedfordshire CCG review the results and encourage all GP practises to update their websites at this crucial time.
