Healthwatch Camden wanted to talk to people who use the in-patient service currently located at St Pancras Hospital to find out what proposed service changes to move mental health inpatient services to Highgate will mean for them. They also heard from people who have used the service in the past, as well as carers and hospital staff. They spoke to 55 people.
Overall, there was strong agreement that the facilities at St Pancras Hospital are outdated and not fit for purpose. Most participants supported the idea of a new, purpose‑built hospital, although a small minority preferred to retain the existing site. Despite widespread support for redevelopment, some valued aspects of St Pancras—such as its central location, good transport links, and more homely, less institutional atmosphere—which they wanted reflected in any new facility.
Views on the proposed Highgate location were mixed. While some found it quieter and more suitable for recovery, others raised concerns about poorer transport links, longer travel times (especially for people in south Camden), and reduced accessibility for visitors. On balance, however, most respondents felt the benefits of improved facilities would outweigh these disadvantages.
Participants highlighted a wide range of desired improvements for the new hospital. The most important priority was access to outdoor space from every ward, as this was seen as essential for wellbeing. Other key recommendations included single en‑suite rooms, better washing and heating facilities, reliable Wi‑Fi, more activity and therapy spaces, improved staff facilities, and on‑site amenities such as a café and shop.
There were also concerns about the design of the Highgate site, with some people describing the existing buildings there as overly institutional or prison‑like. Respondents emphasised that any new building should feel welcoming, non‑institutional, and community‑focused, while maintaining privacy and safety.
To address concerns about the Highgate location, respondents suggested improvements such as better transport links (including a bus stop at the hospital), clearer walking routes to local amenities, and guidance tools like maps or apps for patients and visitors. Some also raised broader concerns about funding the redevelopment through the sale of NHS land.
In conclusion, the consultation found strong support for replacing St Pancras Hospital with a modern facility, provided that key drawbacks of the Highgate location are addressed. The report recommends prioritising outdoor space, involving service users in design, improving transport access, and ensuring clear communication throughout the redevelopment process to maintain trust and confidence.
