Summary of report content

In September 2016, Healthwatch Somerset returned to the Somerset Polio Foundation Support Group to review progress on a community-led project exploring the experiences of people living with post-polio syndrome. Seven members attended the meeting and discussed findings from a survey carried out by the group, as well as wider concerns about health and social care services.

Survey findings suggested a lack of awareness of post-polio syndrome among GPs and other health professionals, with some participants reporting delayed diagnosis, stress, anxiety and difficulties accessing appropriate support. Members also raised concerns about orthotic services, disabled parking and accessibility at Musgrove Park Hospital, community transport, disabled toilet facilities and the accessibility of public consultations for disabled people.

The report recommended further work to improve professional understanding of post-polio syndrome, engage with orthotic services and raise awareness of local support groups. Healthwatch Somerset committed to sharing the findings with providers, commissioners and local decision-makers
