Healthwatch Leeds wanted to highlight some of the experiences of the visually impaired so they could help to inform improvements in health and social care services. They also wanted to find out whether people could access information in a way which met their needs.
Between January and March 2019, Healthwatch worked collaboratively with a number of organisations which helped with the engagement aspect of the research. They used focus groups to collect feedback. Overall, 113 people gave their views.
The biggest challenge people faced were their communication needs not being met and poor access to support.
Healthwatch made recommendations about reviewing policies in health and social care organisations so that the communication needs of people with visual impairments could be catered for.
