Healthwatch Sheffield carried out a survey of relatives and carers attending the Outpatients Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital in September 2018. Twenty-three people completed the survey about their appointment that day. Overall, feedback was very positive, with no respondents reporting dissatisfaction with their experience. Most people were happy with the time they waited for their appointment and almost all were satisfied with how their appointment had been arranged and communicated.
Participants were particularly positive about the new outpatient facilities. The waiting area was frequently described as spacious, clean and bright, and families appreciated the availability of toys, activities for children, coffee facilities and helpful staff. Many respondents commented that the new building had improved the overall experience of attending the hospital.
Some suggestions for improvement were identified. A small number of people wanted better information before appointments, particularly about tests that might take place. Others suggested greater use of email, text messaging and telephone communication when arranging or changing appointments. Families also highlighted practical issues such as parking, seating, pedestrian access outside the building, and the need for more activities aimed at older children.
Overall, respondents described Sheffield Children’s Hospital as friendly, welcoming and efficient. Comments praised the quality of care, smooth running of appointments and improvements made through the new outpatient department. Parking and communication were the main areas identified for further improvement.
