Summary of report content

Healthwatch Salford undertook research on the experiences of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They spoke to 69 children and young people through Talking Mats sessions and received 13 survey responses from parents and carers to inform the local SEND Transformation Strategy.

Most children and young people were positive about their education experience and generally felt safe and accepted at school. Feedback highlighted strong early years support, positive experiences of local SEND provision and the important role played by health visitors. However, some children reported bullying, social isolation and not feeling included in decisions about their education. There was also evidence that some pupils without an Education, Health and Care Plan were not receiving sufficient support.

Participants highlighted concerns about limited suitable education placements for some young people over 18, inconsistent understanding of SEND among education staff and a lack of awareness of individual needs in some schools. Some young people felt confused by decisions made about their educational support and wanted greater involvement in discussions about their future.

Healthwatch Salford recommended improving communication with children, young people and families, increasing SEND awareness and training for education staff, ensuring pupils are more involved in decisions affecting them, providing clearer information about available services and strengthening support for children who do not qualify for an Education, Health and Care Plan. The report also highlighted the value of community-based services and inclusive youth activities in reducing social isolation and supporting wellbeing.
