Healthwatch Dudley undertook research on the experiences of residents living at Saltbrook Place, a supported accommodation service for homeless and vulnerably housed people. They spoke to residents over six months through regular drop-in breakfast sessions, group discussions and creative workshops, and returned in December 2023 to review progress and hear how experiences had changed since the original engagement.
Residents described how events such as family breakdown, domestic abuse, mental ill health, long-term health conditions, leaving prison and leaving care had contributed to homelessness. While people valued the safety, stability and support provided by Saltbrook Place, they also highlighted ongoing challenges around accessing affordable housing, managing finances, maintaining family relationships and coping with poor mental health. Many felt isolated and wanted greater support to rebuild their lives and regain independence.
The report identified several areas where residents wanted additional support, including budgeting advice, mental health support, creative activities, cooking skills, access to digital technology, employment support, family mediation and opportunities for physical activity. Residents also raised concerns about barriers to moving into independent accommodation, particularly the gap between housing costs and available benefits.
Healthwatch Dudley found that Saltbrook Place had responded positively to much of the feedback. Improvements included new information boards, budgeting support, access to laptops, a sensory room, wellbeing workshops, mental health support through Aspire4U, the reopening of the gym and increased opportunities for social engagement. However, the report concluded that further work is needed to improve access to opportunities, reduce isolation and help residents move towards greater independence and long-term housing stability.
