Healthwatch Gateshead undertook review of discharge arrangements at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. The aim of the study was to examine the experience of patients who have recently been discharged from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and where necessary make recommendations for improvements based on the evidence received from patients. They surveyed the public, reaching 186 people.
Overall the patient’s experience of discharge was good with some patients highlighting areas for improvement.
The two major recommendations resulting from the research undertaken by Healthwatch Gateshead are as follows:
- Review and improve the process by which medication is issued during discharge. Recommendation
- Review communications and information regarding the discharge process provided to staff, relatives and patients to ensure it is consistent, timely and relevant.
