Summary of report content

Wessex Voices brought together patients, carers, voluntary organisations and NHS representatives to discuss how the public should be involved in major NHS changes over the next 5 to 10 years. Participants emphasised that involvement must be clear, honest and meaningful, with people understanding how their views will be used and what influence they can realistically have on decisions.

Attendees argued that engagement should move beyond traditional consultation methods by going directly to communities, using existing local networks, and making greater use of social media and technology to reach younger and more diverse audiences. They stressed the importance of using plain language, sharing positive stories and real-life examples, and focusing on issues that are locally relevant to people's lives.

A recurring theme was the need for genuine two-way communication. Participants wanted the NHS to be open about challenges, avoid overpromising, provide feedback on how public input has influenced decisions, and invest in staff with the skills and resources to support effective engagement. They also highlighted the role of the public as "critical friends" who can help improve services and hold the NHS accountable.

The report recommended that NHS organisations improve their capacity for public involvement, work more closely with voluntary organisations and local Healthwatch groups, and regularly assess the quality of engagement activities against principles of clarity, honesty and relevance. It also called for ongoing promotion of opportunities for people to get involved in shaping health and care services.
