In this report Healthwatch Walsall share public feedback on the Pharmacy First service, launched by the NHS in January 2024.

The report shares the experiences of 102 people from Walsall who completed a survey between March and May 2024. Participants reflected a diverse demographic, including different age groups, genders, ethnic backgrounds, and many with long-term conditions or disabilities.

Key findings reveal that awareness of Pharmacy First was mixed: about 25% of respondents knew a lot about the service, while 20% had never heard of it. Awareness of specific ailments treated by Pharmacy First varied, with more than half recognizing the service for children’s infections but less knowledge about other conditions. Awareness of additional community pharmacy services was also varied; flu vaccinations and blood pressure checks were better known than other offerings such as smoking cessation or stoma appliance customisation.

Among those who had used Pharmacy First, satisfaction was high, with 83% rating the service as good or very good. Users appreciated the convenience and the friendly, efficient care that helped avoid GP visits. Most chose Pharmacy First as their first option, while others were referred by NHS 111 or GP practices.

Recommendations focus on improving communication about the Pharmacy First service, particularly clarifying which ailments it covers and increasing public knowledge of the full range of community pharmacy services.
