Summary of report content

Healthwatch West Sussex surveyed 12 residents living in rural parts of Arun, Chichester and Horsham to understand the challenges they face accessing health, wellbeing and community services. Although the sample was small, the findings highlighted consistent concerns around transport, distance to services and the cost of travel. Several respondents reported relying on taxis to attend GP appointments because public transport was limited or unsuitable, making access both difficult and expensive.

Residents mainly accessed GP practices, hospitals, opticians, dentists, physiotherapy and urgent care services. A key issue was limited awareness of wider health and wellbeing support, with some respondents unsure how to access services such as mental health support, weight management programmes, physiotherapy and smoking cessation support. Several said they would only know about such services if they were referred by their GP.

Face-to-face communication remained the preferred way to receive information, followed by email and telephone contact. Many respondents did not use apps or social media, citing age, poor internet connectivity or personal preference. Family, friends, GPs and trusted websites were the most common sources of advice and information. While some people used the NHS App, half of respondents said they did not use apps at all.

Healthwatch concluded that people living in rural areas face significant barriers to accessing health and wellbeing services, particularly around transport, information and digital access. The report highlights the need for clear local signposting, affordable transport options and a range of communication methods to ensure rural residents can access services and support when they need them.
