Healthwatch Barnsley spoke to recent patients of the Acorn Rehabilitation Unit as part of a review of the Unit by NHS South Yorkshire. They interviewed 5 people.
Most people stayed for two weeks, which was the time they expected to stay.
All the patients said they were met on arrival and were informed what the plan was, how long the stay would be and given opportunity to ask any questions. Overall they felt communication with staff was excellent.
People had concerns about the decor and facilities, including baths being inaccessible.
In the main, appointments for community physio sessions were arranged on discharge and any district nursing appointments made before the patient left the unit. There were no leaflets or information given on other services that may have been able to offer support to either the patient or their carer.
The location of the unit was good, with accessible transport links.
The patients their families/carers were really grateful for the care they received while on the unit.Patients felt like they could have been encouraged to do more independently.
If money were no object, patients would have liked a communal facility where they could meet up.
The quality and choice of food was an issue raised by patients.
