Summary of report content

Healthwatch Kent wanted to do some initial insight gathering to understand the mental health and wellbeing impacts for parents and carers of children with special educational needs (SEND) and what parents and carers were accessing to help support their mental health and wellbeing. They also sought to understand, from their perspective, where improvements could be made to the services provided for their children.  They attended events and spoke to 26 parents and carers.

The report looks at:

  • What impacted their confidence in caring for their child
  • What support helped to build their confidence
  • Their experience of having a neurodiverse child
  • The impact on their mental health of caring for their child
  • What helped them support their mental health as a parent
  • What else they needed
  • How help could be improved.
