Healthwatch Oxfordshire investigated the experiences of 87 family members living in military bases using questionnaires about accessing health services.
The report found that although information is available, it is not always obvious where to look. Families found it difficult to register with NHS dental practices due to the frequency of relocations and, thus, not having documentation as proof of address. Respondents gave positive feedback in relation to their experiences of using local general practices. Respondents reported that they used a variety of health and social care services and had positive experiences. The most popular source of mental health support was Talking Space, a free service provided by the NHS.
Two recommendations were made in the report, including: information for new families about accessing local health services and the registration processes would be beneficial; and advising and providing documentation to new families in order to complete this process.
The service provider responded to these recommendations.
