Summary of report content

Healthwatch Barking & Dagenham, Healthwatch City of London, Healthwatch Hackney; Healthwatch Havering; Healthwatch Newham, Healthwatch Redbridge; Healthwatch Tower Hamlets and Healthwatch Waltham Forest undertook engagement to understand people's willingness to take part in research on health and social care services.  They ran three events and a survey, speaking to 733 people.

Participants showed high levels of interest in taking part in research.  Groups who were less interested included Eastern Europeans, Pakistani people, people who weren't religious and people in full time work.

The top three research topics that people were most interested in were mental health, diabetes and cancer.

The top three takeaways from engagement were:

  • Engage with diverse populations; reach out to seldom heard communities wherever they are and communicate about existing projects.
  • Continue participants’ involvement in the research project after they take part in research activities; communicate about results and impact, take feedback on board for quality improvement.
  • Build trust through honest dialogue; demonstrate transparency in communication.
