Healthwatch Norfolk wanted to ensure that the views of young people in mainstream education were included in the local CAMHS transformation plan. Across 10 schools, 131 Year 6 pupils, 534 pupils in Years 9 and 11 and 71 staff responded to their online survey and 87 young people, 25 school staff and 6 parents or carers spoke to them face-to-face.
The report looks at young people’s views of programmes in school that specifically address children’s social and emotional needs. Primary school pupils were more positive about these than secondary school children. The report also explores what young people want from a mental health service – one which is tailored to their lifestyle, and their concerns about long waiting times for treatment.
The report includes 5 recommendations about waiting times, involving young people in staff recruitment and training and development of future services, and how educational institutions could work together to provide a core mental health offer county-wide.
