Summary of report content

Newcastle upon Tyne has 47 care homes for older people. Between June and October 2016, Healthwatch Newcastle carried out research to understand the level of resident involvement in those homes. They undertook surveys of residents and relatives and visited 10 care homes.  They spoke to 137 people.

The report looks at  how care homes involve residents and relatives in decisions about their own care, and also in wider decisions about how the home operates day to day. It highlights examples of local innovative best practice in this report, as well as consider recent research by others into the importance of involvement.

The report contains three recommendations about improving involvement of residents and relatives in care homes.
