In 2017, Healthwatch Leicestershire carried out a survey of mothers, mothers-to-be and healthcare professionals. The work was undertaken following the National Maternity review: ‘Better Births Five Year Forward View for NHS maternity services.
Healthwatch Leicestershire heard from 190 people, including staff. The engagement was carried out using two separate questionnaires, internal partners and social media.
The report contains key findings, insights and emerging themes and recommendations, as well as top tips for new mothers, user experience examples of good practice and case studies. Areas explored with participants were antenatal care, birth care and neonatal care. The report also contains insight from health professionals.
Strategic and practical recommendations are made, which include more transparency in information and realistic expectations to be set around the continuity of care, better information sharing among healthcare professionals and further exploration into the delivery of emotional support following birth.
