Minor eye conditions

Healthwatch Suffolk undertook research on experiences of minor eye conditions. They spoke to 16 people between July and October 2023 who had consulted a health professional about an eye problem within the previous year. Conditions reported included flashes and floaters, ingrown eyelashes, dry or gritty eyes, eyelid problems and eye irritation. Most people sought help from either an optician or their GP.
Experiences were mixed. Of the 13 people who rated their experience, eight described it as good or very good. Positive feedback highlighted prompt access to care, thorough eye examinations, clear explanations, reassurance and effective referrals when needed. Several respondents praised opticians for fitting them in quickly and providing detailed advice.
However, five people reported poor or very poor experiences. Common concerns included incorrect diagnoses, cancelled appointments, ineffective treatment, a lack of information about what to do if symptoms worsened and delays in receiving appropriate care. Some respondents felt they had been left to navigate the system themselves and were unsure which service they should contact for help.
Healthwatch Suffolk concluded that there was no clear or widely understood pathway for people with minor eye conditions. They found that patients consulted a range of professionals and often lacked information about where to seek help. The report recommended clearer public information and a more consistent NHS process to help people access the right eye care service and reduce unnecessary demand on GP practices and hospitals.
