Mental Health Voice: Dartford Gravesham Swanley

Healthwatch Kent and Medway Voice reviewed 41 pieces of feedback about mental health services in Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley between January and March 2026. Overall, people shared positive experiences of talking therapies, crisis care and supportive staff. Feedback about care provided by staff was more positive than elsewhere in Kent and Medway, with many people describing professionals as compassionate, understanding and helpful during difficult periods. 

A key finding was the increase in feedback relating to health inequalities. This generated the highest proportion of negative comments during the quarter. People from ethnic minority communities reported experiencing language barriers, difficulties navigating services and a lack of culturally sensitive care. Some felt judged or misunderstood by professionals, while others found it difficult to explain their experiences because English was not their first language. 

Several examples highlighted the importance of community support and advocacy. People described receiving valuable help from community groups, veterans’ organisations and online support networks, particularly when they struggled to access or understand statutory services. Others reported difficulties accessing appointments that fitted around work commitments, long waits when contacting services and poor communication between hospitals and community providers. 

The report concludes that culturally sensitive practice, access to interpreters and better communication between services are key areas for improvement. It encourages organisations to consider how they support people from different backgrounds, reduce barriers to access and ensure mental health services are inclusive, respectful and responsive to individual needs.
