Healthwatch Lincolnshire looked at the mental health of new fathers, military families, veterans and people working in farming, agriculture and horticulture, due to their presence in the county, the fact that they are often under-represented in mental health discussion and face unique often unmet needs. They spoke to 88 people.
There was often a stigma about seeking mental health support, including being too busy and taboo, not being used to asking for help and feeling that asking for support wasn't macho.
People experienced barriers to support, including long waiting times, not meeting the criteria and a lack of information.
Online information was often easy to find and navigate. But people felt it was too generic and would prefer face to face support.
People felt that there was often a sharp transition from receiving support to being left with little or no support. They wanted a more gradual transition.
Positive experiences appeared due to the actions of individual healthcare professionals. There was praise for individuals and charities that provide support to veterans.
