Mental Health in Menopause

Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cumberland decided to undertake a project on mental health and the menopause after consulting with women. The project involved a survey where women were asked to pose questions to experts, a social media campaign about mythbusting, an event to celebrate National Menopause Awareness Day and creating an A-Z resource on the menopause.

Key questions women wanted information on were:

  • How to ease anxiety during menopause?
  • Do all women experience symptoms of menopause?
  • How can women prepare for menopause before perimenopause starts?
  • How do I support someone going through menopause?
  • Benefits and risks of taking HRT to manage menopause symptoms
  • What things can women do to ease menopause symptoms?
  • Are there any positives to menopause?

Issues that arose from their engagement were:

  • The need for women healthcare professionals to be available
  • the awareness of supplements and medication to manage menopause symptoms
  • Menopause-related stigma
  • Navigating menopause
