Summary of report content

To celebrate International Men’s day 2019, Healthwatch Salford in partnership with Salford Clinical Commissioning Group ran a project from Nov 2019 to Feb 2020, which allowed men from across Salford to share their experiences of health and care. This report captures what the 194 men told us about their experiences through surveys and focus groups, the aim of which was to help inform commissioners and providers of services in understanding the barriers that some men are facing when trying to keep themselves healthy.

Key findings included:

  • that health and care providers need to be more proactive in their approach in encouraging men to access their services and get their messages right from the outset
  • more workplace interventions were needed
  • men need to be treated with a degree of sensitivity by clinical staff
  • men wanted easier access to mental health support.

Further to the publication of this report, we will be following up the response from service providers and commissioners and welcome the opportunity to collaborate further into looking at some of our findings more closely.
