Healthwatch Lancashire undertook research on views and experiences of cancer and cancer services among members of the Seniors Together in Rossendale group. The work was carried out in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support as part of a series of engagement events designed to hear from seldom-heard communities. A 90-minute workshop involving 13 participants used interactive activities and discussion to explore perceptions of cancer, experiences of healthcare professionals, and how support services can better reach people.
Participants reported that stigma and reluctance to discuss cancer still exist, with some people delaying conversations about diagnosis and treatment. Several participants shared experiences of delayed diagnoses or concerns that symptoms had not initially been taken seriously, while others described positive experiences in which healthcare professionals listened carefully and arranged appropriate tests.
Views on primary care were mixed. Some participants praised their GP practices and valued continuity of care with a trusted doctor, while others highlighted difficulties obtaining appointments, concerns about seeing different clinicians, and challenges navigating modern appointment and check-in systems. Participants also noted the importance of being able to communicate confidently with healthcare professionals and feeling listened to during consultations.
Participants felt that Macmillan Cancer Support should increase its visibility within local communities, as many people were unaware of the full range of support available. They suggested that outreach through community groups and venues would help raise awareness, encourage engagement, and ensure that people affected by cancer can access support earlier in their cancer journey.
