Summary of report content

Healthwatch Lancashire and Macmillan Cancer Support undertook an engagement event with members of the Fylde Community Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Friends Group on 16 March 2016 to understand views and experiences of cancer services among LGBT people. The workshop explored attitudes towards cancer, cancer screening, diagnosis and experiences of healthcare. Participants generally felt able to access health services, but highlighted a number of issues specific to LGBT communities.

A key theme was concern about cancer screening and diagnosis for transgender people. Participants reported difficulties around access to cervical and prostate screening, feeling that services were often designed around traditional gender expectations and did not always adequately recognise transgender identities or needs. Some also felt that LGBT-specific health concerns were not always fully understood by healthcare professionals.

Views on GP services were mixed. Many participants reported positive relationships with their GPs, describing them as supportive, respectful and inclusive. However, others felt that some healthcare professionals lacked understanding of LGBT issues, and concerns were raised about perceived prejudice relating to sexual orientation or gender identity. Participants stressed the importance of being treated as individuals and having the option to choose a male or female doctor where appropriate.

Overall, the discussion highlighted the importance of inclusive, person-centred cancer services that recognise the specific needs of LGBT people. Participants emphasised the need for greater awareness among healthcare professionals, improved access to appropriate screening services, and ensuring that LGBT patients feel respected, listened to and supported throughout their healthcare journey.
