The 10 local Healthwatch in the Greater Manchester area engaged 67 people who gave feedback on dementia services. This was part of the network-wide NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) project.
The report found that long waiting times for a diagnosis negatively impacted people's experiences of dementia services. A number of people felt they had been given a diagnosis and then left to ‘fend for themselves.’ There was much variation between areas in terms of post-diagnosis support. Carers and family members also reported feeling the benefits of attending groups for peer support, friendship and to trade information and tips. It was highlighted that staff need more specialist knowledge about dementia and integrated skills. A small amount of respondents had used digital services and felt that they were not good for people with dementia.
The Greater Manchester Health and Social Care (GMHSC) Partnership responded to this report.
