NHS England published the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) in January 2019. Through this report Healthwatch Devon, Healthwatch Plymouth and Healthwatch Torbay aimed to inform local health and care organisations about what local people think and feel about local NHS services and what improvements could be made to how these services are delivered in the future.
The report focused on prevention, role of the community and technology, covering people with cancer, dementia, the elderly, carers, patients with specific conditions such as heart and lung and rural communities. The preventative areas looked at include preventative medicine, early diagnosis, referrals, communication needs, community services, domiciliary and locally based care. The role of the community area looked at respondents concerns about overcoming stigmas, difficulty in accessing services, quality of services received, diagnosis and treatment. Technology covered the use of digital services in delivering services and communication as well as local services reliance on digital systems.
The report found that people identified some key issues across all themes. respondents would like to see a reduction in waiting times, better access, affordability of residential care homes as well as consideration for the elderly in the digitisation of services.
