Healthwatch Haringey was commissioned by LB Haringey Public Health to gather more information about access to sexual health services for women, trans and non-binary people, with a particular focus on their knowledge of and access to different long-acting, reversible contraceptive options (LARCs). They undertook a survey to which 103 people responded.
Many local people do not have sufficient awareness of and access to LARCS
Whilst people knew that LARCs reduced chances of pregnancy, many were unaware of their side effects and alternative uses
Some people perceived LARCs as mysterious, unknown or potentially damaging
Condoms were by far the preferred form of contraception
There are cultural taboos, stigmas and barriers to LARC uptake amongst some seldom heard communities
Most participants hadn't seen information about LARCs in common community languages and highlighted the need to consider underrepresented communities in the borough.
