Summary of report content

Healthwatch Derbyshire spoke to 25 LGBT+ people between September and November 2016 to understand their experiences of using health services. Overall, participants were positive about many aspects of care, particularly some GP practices, Nottingham Gender Identity Clinic and Nottingham sexual health services. However, several recurring concerns highlighted inequalities and barriers experienced by LGBT+ people.

Key issues included inconsistent knowledge of transgender healthcare among GPs, delays and distrust around referrals to gender identity clinics, professionals failing to use preferred names and pronouns, and a perception that mental health difficulties were sometimes wrongly attributed to sexuality or gender identity. Participants also wanted health services to be more visibly LGBT+-friendly through staff awareness, inclusive information and visible signs of support.

Feedback about the London Road Sexual Health Clinic in Derby was largely negative, with concerns about long waits, appointment delays, privacy and access. In contrast, Nottingham's sexual health service received consistently positive feedback for its accessibility, organisation and inclusiveness. Participants also highlighted issues faced by same-sex parents and transgender people when accessing fertility, contraception and mental health services.

Overall, Healthwatch concluded that staff awareness and inclusivity needed further improvement across services. Recommendations included better support for transgender patients, more consistent use of preferred names and genders, improved referral processes, greater LGBT+ visibility within healthcare settings, and action to address concerns about Derby's sexual health service.
