Healthwatch North Somerset carried out an investigation to gather information from carers regarding their experiences of support in the area.
The aim of the investigation was to reach anyone performing a caring role in North Somerset. This included elderly carers of adults, adult carers of people with dementia, carers in work, parent carers, young carers and carers of people with mental ill health.
The investigation was carried out by distribution of two versions of a questionnaire, one for adult carers and one for children and young adults up to the age of 25. 1800 ‘Share your Story’ leaflets were handed out between January and March 2017. 82 replies (just under 5%) were received, 32 young carers and 50 adult carers.
The key findings showed that 63% of young carers that responded had been provided with information about how to get additional support and 75% had someone to talk to about their caring responsibilities. The biggest concern for young carers was the worry they had, when not at home, for the person they care for.
Of the adult carers 58% received a referral. 27% said that both they and the person they cared for received priority status with their GP.
Recommendations were made that all carers should be referred for carer assessment and all made aware of the priority GP appointment system. Young carers should also be advised of the benefits of allowing agencies to share information regarding their carer status with their school and GP.
It also recommended that information was widely available and easily accessible regarding services, advice and support.
