Summary of report content

Healthwatch Manchester produced a Health and Care Experience profile about a Black man with multiple health conditions, including recent experience of cancer care services.

This was part of a project led by Healthwatch England and NHS England to develop a qualitative methodology as part of the Local Integration Index. Eight local Healthwatch piloted this methodology by focussing on particular local groups with experiences of care across several health and care services. This methodology can be used to ensure people’s experiences of integration are used by local systems to track how services are working together locally.

In this report, Healthwatch Manchester analyse the results of engagement they undertook with six men on this topic.

They found that all men spoke about the positive relationship they had with their GP from initial consultation to treatment.  All participants felt involved with care decisions. Generally, the participants reported being quite satisfied with the way the different services worked together.  There was some concern over mental health referrals.

Overall men found the information leaflets to be very unhelpful. They stated that nothing pointed to cultural or religious factors that will influence care and how they engage with services. It is clear that a more culturally appropriate approach is needed in order to fully engage all communities.
