Summary of report content

Healthwatch Devon received a request from commissioners review the experiences of members of the public, service users, and carers in order to inform the 2014 recommissioning of the Devon Independent Living Integrated Service.

The aim of the Devon Independent Living Integrated Service (DILIS) is to provide individuals, who require assistance and support in their homes to maintain their health and independence, with access to the health and social care equipment and specialist support that they require.

There was previous engagement and report written focussing on the core range of equipment currently provided by the service and a report containing findings of a focus group; this report provides the responses received from a further questionnaire focussed on three specific areas of potential support mechanisms. These three specific topics were minor adaptations, Speech and Language Therapy equipment and Telecare.

While the report does not make an analysis of the responses, the only wholly positive comments received were about the Minor adaptation services. Minor adaptations include key safes, bath or stair rails, bespoke fixed ramps, bed alarms and other similar adaptations. It was felt that staff were understanding of the needs and imaginative in their problem solving for successful outcomes.

The rest of the survey responses, in the main, reflect the poor communication of what is available, the suitability of services against the needs of those seeking support, and the need for training (for both users and support staff) in how to use the specialist equipment.

There is no response from the commissioner included in the report.
