Summary of report content

In March 2020, Healthwatch Brighton and Hove published a report on patient’s experiences of primary care in Brighton and Hove. They wanted to find out how local practices are set to deliver core functions before they prepare themselves to offer the additional services expected under the new PCN arrangement including extended access (virtual and roving GPs), extended hours, physiotherapy, minor surgery and social prescribing (wellbeing services such as support for long-term conditions, complex social needs and mental health support).

They spoke to 998 patients across all 40 GP locations in Brighton and Hove (35 practices and five branch surgeries). Responses were derived from online and face-to-face questionnaires. The overall feedback was that most patients rated the overall quality of care communication as good or very good, by either their GP or nurse combined and patient satisfaction with their GP Practice was also generally good. They also found that the patient caseload had increased from 2,394 patients per doctor in 2017/18 to 2,479 in 2018/2019 while the number of GP Practices had decreased from 48 to 35 from 2015 to 2019. The report also explored patient experiences around accessibility and personalised care.

The report made several recommendations including that for bookings, consultation, complaints, preventative services, suggestions for environmental improvements, specific recommendations for local CCG, NHS Trust and pharmacists.
