Young Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire carried out a project through which young people received basic first aid training to give them confidence in their ability to help prevent further injury or preserve life. Another aim of the project was to make young people feel more confident, improve their resilience, and be educated in key lifesaving skills. This work was funded by a Youth Work and Positive Activity Grant from Central Bedfordshire Council's Youth Support Service.
The report demonstrates how Young Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire planned and organised for St John Ambulance service to provide the training. It also notes the impact of the project and outcomes achieved. Evaluation found that both the young people involved and their parents felt positively about the training. Young Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire made a number of recommendations around: the teaching of First Aid in schools; First Aid being incorporated as a mandatory part of the driving test in the UK; and the Council providing funding for regular First Aid training events across the county.
