Summary of report content

Healthwatch Northumberland carried out engagement events and a questionnaire to gather people’s views on a proposal to close the Riversdale Surgery in Wylam and relocate services to Oaklands Health Centre in Prudhoe.

The feedback gathered showed that the local people who shared their views did not think this proposal was a good idea. They were concerned about how they would continue to access the services offered by the Riversdale Surgery, particularly using public transport. This issue was especially important to those aged over 65 who were aware that they may stop driving within the next few years. It was noted that there were long waits for local public transport and doubt about the long-term future of the only direct bus route between the two areas. People were concerned that other options for providing services in the Wylam area had not been considered.  There were also concerns about the impact on the other GP practice in the area, ongoing communications about the progress of any changes, and the transparency of the decision-making process.

Healthwatch Northumberland made three recommendations: to increase communication with Riversdale Surgery patients and the public on the current state of the proposal, how patient views are being addressed and any key dates and outcomes in the decision-making process; for Healthwatch Northumberland to be provided with information about the capacity at other local GP practices; and for further consideration, including patient engagement, of options to address transport issues that will be faced by those using local public transport if the proposed changes take place.
