Summary of report content

Healthwatch Wandsworth surveyed 29 Recovery Café users and 18 people with mental health needs who did not use the cafés. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with users describing the cafés as a vital source of support that helps prevent or manage mental health crises. Many participants said the service provided a safe, welcoming environment where they could talk openly, access activities and receive support from both staff and peers.

Users particularly valued the friendly and knowledgeable staff, peer support, therapeutic activities and the non-judgemental atmosphere. Many reported that the cafés helped them avoid hospital admissions or worsening mental health crises and used the service regularly, often several times a week.

Key Findings

  • Most users felt the Recovery Café helped them during a mental health crisis (23 of 29 respondents).
  • The most valued aspects were staff support, peer support, activities, and having a safe place to talk and socialise.
  • Many users attended frequently, with over half attending at least weekly.
  • Location, transport links and opening hours were important factors influencing attendance.
  • Users wanted longer opening hours and more Recovery Café locations across South West London.
  • People who had not used the cafés identified transport, opening times, confidence and motivation as barriers to attendance.

Conclusion

The report concluded that Recovery Cafés are highly valued mental health support services that provide a safe, accessible alternative to crisis services for many people. Healthwatch recommended expanding access through additional locations, extending opening hours, and clarifying whether the cafés are intended only for people in crisis or also for those seeking ongoing support to prevent future crises.
