Summary of report content

Healthwatch Norfolk researched experiences of carers supporting adults with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), engaging 64 survey respondents, 13 interviewees, and 6 focus group participants between July 2023-2024.

Nearly half of carers reported their voices weren't heard by healthcare staff. Most indicated caring negatively impacted their health, finances and relationships, with many struggling to access suitable support. Carers highlighted need for specialised information about SMI, medications and side effects.

Key issues identified:

  • Feeling dismissed when trying to participate in care decisions
  • Poor continuity of care and crisis services
  • Lack of trust in healthcare services
  • Communication barriers

Recommendations:

  • Enhanced staff training on carer involvement
  • Improved specialised information provision
  • Creation of carer forums and champion roles
  • Better mental health service delivery

NSFT's response includes establishing a Carer Champions Network, developing a Trust-wide Carer Booklet, and implementing mandatory staff training on carer awareness.
