This report details the challenges faced by individuals with drug and alcohol misuse issues in accessing mental health services in Medway and Kent. It includes a detailed case study about Brian, a 60-year-old alcohol dependent man living in Medway. The report describes his difficulties in accessing community mental health support, due to his alcohol consumption.
The report also includes feedback from 38 participants collected by Healthwatch Kent, Healthwatch Medway, and Mental Health Voice between March 2023 and March 2024, which discuss substance misuse and interaction with mental health services.
Of the feedback, 27 were negative, with 33% relating to difficulties in accessing services or being discharged due to substance misuse. Positive feedback mainly highlighted support from peer groups.
The report highlights the gaps in providing integrated care for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse issues, with Brian's ongoing lack of appropriate care being a example of this.
The report makes policy recommendations such as specialised support pathways, enhanced training for service providers, and the establishment of an appeal process.
