Healthwatch Cheshire West conducted an Enter and View visit to Woodland Road Care Home, a 4 bedded Care Home run by MacIntyre Care, on 25 February 2014.
Woodland Road Care Home provides care and support to a maximum of four people who have severe learning disabilities and are unable to live independently. The Home is situated in a dormer bungalow in a residential area close to shops and transport links. There is parking space at the back and in front of the bungalow, also providing space for the Home's large minibus. The garden is well fenced and the residents are able to get into the garden by a ramp from the conservatory.
The Authorised Representatives were unable to directly communicate with residents on this visit so conversations were held with relatives and staff. All staff take a role in activities and take a turn in driving the mini-bus. The parent of one resident told the visiting team that two of the residents were taken to a theatre in Liverpool to see a musical show the previous week. The Home organises outings to hydrotherapy and swimming, reflexology, and residents attend Rebound sessions as well as using their own in-house sensory room.
The Authorised Representatives were told how one resident is taken to the cemetery once a month to put flowers on his mother's grave and another is encouraged to take photos on his iPad so that he can show his family what he has been doing.
The only recommendation made was that the families of residents should be more involved in developing care plans. There was no provider response included within the report.
