Enter and view: Woodfields Residential Home

Healthwatch Wolverhampton carried out an unannounced Enter and View visit to Woodfields Residential Care Home in response to concerns about the quality and safety of care. The home was described as clean, homely and odour-free, and residents and relatives who spoke to Healthwatch were generally positive, with one resident describing staff as “great” and a visiting family reporting they were happy with the care provided. 

However, Healthwatch identified several areas of concern. Observers noted limited interaction between staff and residents during the visit, a lack of organised activities, poor upkeep in some areas of the garden, concerns about security arrangements, and issues such as personal belongings being left in communal areas. The report also noted that some residents appeared disengaged for extended periods and that communication with relatives was not being maintained regularly. 

Staff spoke positively about training and the support they received, but concerns were raised about the absence of staff uniforms or identification badges, the lack of a dedicated staff room, and the fact that responsibility for most care plan updates rested with a single member of staff. 

Healthwatch recommended improvements including strengthening security arrangements, increasing activities for residents, improving communication with families, enhancing the garden environment, introducing clearer staff identification, and ensuring care planning responsibilities were shared more widely. The provider accepted some recommendations but disputed or challenged several findings, stating that some observations did not fully reflect residents' preferences, individual care needs or everyday practice within the home
