Summary of report content

Healthwatch Bucks undertook an enter and view visit to Ruby Ward at the Whiteleaf Centre on 21 May 2024. During their visit to the Ruby Ward, Healthwatch heard from six patients and one relative/carer. Staff responded to ad hoc questions as they walked around the ward.

Key findings

  • Patients were happy with the food on the ward. They were satisfied with the variety of options and portions
  • Religious and spiritual needs were supported on the ward. Healthwatch saw prayer mats in quiet rooms. There is a weekly communion service on the activity programme
  • There were posters signposting to emotional support and relaxation groups
  •  There was no ward team photo board on display for patients to see pictures and role titles of staff
  • Some patients said that they did not feel safe on the ward. There was a perception of threat from other patients
  • Nearly all of the patients who Healthwatch spoke to believed that they had no involvement in decision making about their care
  • There was no information about how to give feedback or complain on display. Staff said that patients have the opportunity to raise concerns at daily planning meetings
  • Some parts of the ward looked worn and in need of refurbishment. Paint was scuffed and coming off the walls in a few rooms. The walls of the seclusion room were painted in vibrant green colour as opposed to a more calming colour

The report has six recommendations and a response from the provider.
